I got to storm the court after we beat Duke right in the crush of the court, said Reid. I never expected that.
Reid’s love for UVa. began in 1963 after he dropped out of high school. He spent weekends partying with his pal,air jordan 12, Billy Sturman, but never applied to college. And despite becoming a sports writer, conveyer belt salesman and even a race-car driver, Reid couldn’t shake his old buddy’s message to give college a try.
So in 2009, at the age of 66, he took community college classes, applied to UVa. and was accepted.
It is my home, explained Reid. I felt it when I first walked on grounds, cheap air jordans. I felt a connection.
Reid also received special permission to initiate in Chi Phi fraternity, air jordan retro 11, with final approval from his wife.
Now he has a 3.5 GPA in the Interdisciplinary Studies program, air jordan 13. And though his friend Sturman passed away in a car accident in 1984, Reid visits his memorial brick at Chi Phi often to express gratitude to his brother eternal, air max 2013.
You’re a good man, Billy Sturman, said Reid. I’m so glad you talked to me about the University and what I needed to be doing.
Reid graduates next spring but can’t bear the thought of leaving UVa. He’s planning to apply to grad school, so he can stay three more years.

A rebuttal to Kay Campbell’s premise that the US Military is not anti-Christian (Your view)-air jordan 11

A rebuttal to Kay Campbell’s premise that the US Military is not anti-Christian (Your view)
“Mikey Weinstein, isfounder and director of the ,”
. Also,”Weinstein, who is Jewish
and a U.S,air jordan 11. Air Force veteran, is not ‘anti-Christian,’ but he is
anti-bullying.”
Here are some of Weinstein’s actions:–According to
“Mikey Weinstein reportedly demanded the Army court-martial its Chief of
Chaplains for announcing an interfaith day of prayer: “The Military
Religious Freedom Foundation [MRFF] sought Maj. Gen. Douglas Carver’s ouster on
the day Carver designated for prayer and fasting for chaplains … Foundation
President Mikey Weinstein … alleging widespread religious discrimination within
the military called Wednesday for the Army to court martial its chief of
chaplains …” –In , they mention: “Mikey Weinstein reportedly
threatened violence to a former Navy Chaplain, saying “I would like to
beat the s**t out of him in a boxing ring or in an alley behind a
Safeway.” Mikey later sued (and failed) to stop the Chaplain from publicly
praying the Psalms to God.” –Quoting : “Mikey Weinstein labels Bible-believing
Christians as monsters, writing that “those evil, fundamentalist Christian
creatures and their spiritual heirs have taken refuge behind flimsy, well-worn,
gauze-like euphemistic facades such as ‘family values’ and ‘religious
liberty.’” Kay, get your facts straight – you claim to be a religious
journalist. You don’t find these statements anti-Christian?
Kay, check out these incidents:
1) The Department of Veterans Affairs forbids references to God and
Jesus during burial ceremonies at Houston National Cemetery. 2) The Army issues guidelines for Walter Reed Medical Center
stipulating that “No religious items (i.e. Bibles, reading materials and/or
facts) are allowed to be given away or used during a visit. 3) The Air Force Academy rescinds support for Operation Christmas
Child, air max 95, a program to send holiday gifts to impoverished children across the
world, because the program is run by a Christian charity. 4) The Air Force removes “God” from the patch of Rapid Capabilities
Office (the word on the patch was in Latin: DEI,cheap air jordans.) (Wallbuilders) Kay mentions a recent “briefing to U.S. Army soldiers include
“Evangelical Christianity” and “Catholicism” along with
terrorist organizations Al-Qaeda, Muslim Brotherhood, and Hamas to show
examples of “religious extremism.” She loves this, air jordan sneakers, and
says although the Army removed the slide in the presentation that showed this,
“Personally, I think the slide should have stayed in the presentation.
After all, any group, even Christians, can become extreme, air jordan.” I’d like to see the Army put the Southern Poverty Law Center,
pro-choicers, or the Human Rights Campaign in the next
presentation. After all, any group, can become extreme. (I
won’t hold my breath.) There are many more examples of anti-Christian bigotry in the U.S. Armed
Services. Christians should serve God -first and
foremost. True Christians will not enlist or re-enlist! Mark MurphyDecatur

A family stops to check flight information on the day the renovated terminal opened at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport-air jordan 12

A family stops to check flight information on the day the renovated terminal opened at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. This sign would on March 22, 2013,air jordan 12, collapse and kill Luke Bresette, 10, severely injure his mother, and hurt two of his siblings, air jordan 13. (Joe Songer/jsonger@al.com)
Who do we curse after the fact? The designer? The contractor? The subs or the airport itself?
I can’t stop thinking about Amity Island. You know, that little town in “Jaws, air jordan sneakers.”The threat was in the air and the blood in the water. Sheriff Brody demanded somebody do something, but the mayor and townspeople said nah. It s all good, cheap air jordan 12.Because the summer season bore down, and business on the island life, really depended on the tourists. The beaches had to open. The show had to go on. What, after all, is the worst that could happen? Da dum. Da dum.It seems clear now — clear as the murky surf off that island, anyway — that as the March opening of the renovated Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Inernational Airport approached this year, warnings had been issued and concerns had been raised about stability of the Multi-User Flight Information Display Systems like the one that on .The warnings weren t as clear as shark bites. Blood was not yet on the beach. But there were red flags. [What we know from the documents: ]Fish Construction, a Texas company hired to build the cabinet for the MUFIDS, and Monumental Contracting, a Birmingham firm subcontracted to install it, swapped notes on stability, according to a narrative written by a Brasfield Gorrie lawyer. The subcontractors sought advice from architect KPS and passed some of the notes to Brasfield Gorrie, the big fish in this project that served as construction manager at risk. Brasfield Gorrie, the guys with the $100 million liability insurance, stepped in for Monumental for reasons that still remain murky — to finish installation of the MUFIDS.Steps had been taken to make other devices safer. In installing the first MUFIDS not the one that fell Brasfield Gorrie anchored them to the floor or, in one case, wedged it to the ceiling. The last MUFIDS the one that fell stood next to a wall, and that was likely why it was not immediately anchored. The cabinets were designed to allow for maintenance from the rear, so attaching them to a wall would inhibit installation and repair. So whether because of a rush to open or because stability concerns weren’t addressed the fatal MUFIDS , as Brasfield Gorrie later relayed, was left on its own, level and stable. So the beaches the $200 million airport project went on to open as scheduled March 13, despite a note on the final March 6 punch list inspection that noted without urgency that the MUFIDS was not plumb. Maybe that means something. As likely it s a note on a cosmetic change. There are still more questions than answers. We don t know precisely what stirred contractors and subcontractors to worry. They aren t talking, and some public records that might shed light on important decisions remain, for now, out of public view. It is possible workers recognized what several in the architectural, engineering and construction industry have independently seen in the evolution of design plans for the MUFIDS: The changes across time ended in a less stable structure. An initial 2010 set of plans called for a floor-mounted MUFIDS with an 18-inch base. By the time the project was done, designers had chopped a six-inch block out of the front of that base, and added weight to the front that could alter the center of gravity. The design included a bar on the front right above that six-inch empty space — referred to as a footrest. Was it a design flaw? All we know for sure is that after the incident that killed Luke Bresette, a company was called in to reverse-engineer the design for safety. It recommended the footrest be removed, that threaded metal rods be inserted from top to bottom in the nine-foot-tall display, and that those rods be embedded three inches into the concrete slab at the base.Who do we curse after the fact? The designer? The contractor? The subs or the airport itself?Do we blame those who raised red flags, but did not fly them high enough, air jordan?Do we blame those who heard but did not heed, who changed designs, or who did not question why? Do we rush to blame those who didn t do the jobs for which they were hired, or those who stepped in to finish them?Do we blame anybody? Do we blame everybody? What s really important here is that a tragedy like this is never, ever allowed to take place again. And in some ways just as in Amity Island the blame lies across a whole way of life. Our cozy and all-too-often insular systems failed, allowing a public airport to turn over so much control to a private company that it didn t hear the murmurs of trouble and maybe didn t want to know. Multiple private companies debated safety out of the public view, and airport authority members just like many other public officials — habitually seem to care less about the job to be done than who gets paid to do it.What s the worst that can happen?John Archibald s column appears Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the Birmingham News, and on AL.com.

By Joan Benso and David Patti-air max 2012

By Joan Benso and David Patti

Almost a decade ago, governors from across the country got together to have a long-overdue discussion about why so many students were graduating from high school ill-prepared for college. At the same time, the business community was sounding the alarm about good paying jobs going unfilled because high school graduates lacked basic math and reading skills, as well as good work habits.

The consensus among the governors Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals was that our students could do better, but we had to set higher expectations to get better academic results, air max 2012.

So with the input of educators, air jordan 11, parents and experts in English and math, along with governors and other state-level leaders, the Common Core State Standards were developed for English and math. Eventually, 46 states voluntarily adopted these standards, including Pennsylvania in 2010.

Lately, there s been a lot of negative chatter about the Common Core, much of it based on ill-informed speculation that it is a federal government plot to take over our local schools, air jordan 13, dictate classroom curriculum or compile databases on our kids for some sinister, unstated purpose. In reality, the Common Core is a state-led initiative that involves no new student data collection and in no way usurps Pennsylvania s long history of local control.

In simple terms, the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards will help give our students, parents and all taxpayers assurance that the resources we put into education are truly preparing our graduates for the challenges they will face beyond high school whether that means joining the workforce, enlisting in the military or pursuing a postsecondary degree, air jordan.

To understand why the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards are necessary, consider the issues our schools and employers have been trying to address.

In 2012 alone, more than 40 percent of high school graduates in Dauphin County schools received diplomas despite failing to show proficiency in math and reading. Rates for other area counties show 25 percent failing to show proficiency in Cumberland County, 36 percent in Lebanon County, 39 percent in Perry County and 34 percent in York County. If these underprepared graduates went on to postsecondary education, there s a good chance they d have to take time-consuming and costly remedial courses to learn what they should have learned in high school.

The lack of preparedness isn t helping the region s workforce, either. According to the state Department of Labor and Industry, more than 2,800 job openings in a four-county region (Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry and York) went unfilled for 90 days or more this year, in large part because employers couldn t find adequately skilled workers to fill those jobs.

The fact is, giving a diploma to a student who is not proficient cheats the student and the taxpayers. Using the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards in conjunction with quality instruction and aligned assessments can help remedy to this problem.

The standards don t tell teachers how to structure their lesson plans, they don t dictate which textbooks your kids have to use, and they don t undermine local control by school districts. Instead, the standards set the bar for what our students should know at each grade level. They serve as a floor of basic academic expectations, not a ceiling that limits a student s learning. If a school or district wants to set a higher academic bar than what is dictated by the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards, they are free to do so.

To ensure the academic standards are being met, our public schools use the Pennsylvania System of School Assessments (PSSAs) and the Keystone Exams, which are aligned to standards. The Keystone Exams are used at the high school level to ensure graduate preparedness, and if a student fails a Keystone Exam, they can get additional instruction and re-take the exam, cheap air jordans. The goal is to make sure we aren t failing those students by letting them graduate unprepared.

Those who say we should abandon state standards don t have a workable alternative. Abandoning the Common Core really means stranding the commonwealth s students on an island of academic mediocrity and lost opportunities. Our students, parents, employers and taxpayers deserve better.

Alabama Head Coach talks with reporters about his team’s mindset Thursday evening prior to the Crimson Caravan event at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, Alabama
Nick Saban, shown here speaking at a Team Focus benefit dinner in Mobile last month, was back in the Port City on Thursday with the Crimson Caravan. (Mike Brantley/mbrantley@al.com)MOBILE, Alabama — Last year, when Alabama head coach Nick Saban made the rounds on the spring speaking circuit, air max 2013, he was repeatedly asked to compare the 2012 edition of the Crimson Tide then being formed to a 2010 squad that had faced many of the same issues — the loss of a lot of defensive starters and the challenge of trying to repeat as national champions.that he didn’t see the sense of entitlement that he’d seen heading into the 2010 season, cheap air jordan 12. The 2012 squad then went out and won another national championship. So what about now, in 2013, coming off two straight national championships? How is the Crimson Tide’s mindset this year?”We’ve been a work in progress this year in terms of trying to get our players to focus on paying attention to detail,” Saban said Thursday before his Crimson Caravan appearance at the Mobile Convention Center, air jordan shoes. “I always use the analogy that … in a season you can go back and look at these five or six critical plays that are going to determine the outcome of what happens with your season. And you never know when those things are going to come up. So if you don’t have the right preparation and you haven’t done all the things you need to do to play your very best, you’re not going to be in the best position to make those plays when they do pop up.”That’s something we’ve been able to do in the past and I think that’s something that this team needs to prove that they’re capable of doing as well.”

MONTEVALLO-air jordan retro 11

MONTEVALLO, Alabama — When asked how he felt about this
morning’s University of Montevallo graduation ceremony finally arriving for
him, Centreville’s Brett Gilbert had one word.
“Relieved, air jordan retro 11,” the 25-year-old graduate from Bibb County
said.
Holding his 7-month-old daughter, Braylee, in his arms and
wearing his black cap and gown, Gilbert was ready to receive his bachelor’s degree in
math. “Very much so,” he said, standing next to his wife, Rachel.
Gilbert joined roughly 280 graduates at the spring
commencement ceremony that relocated from Flowerhill to the McChesney Student
Activity Center due to rain. Weather couldn’t stop the enthusiasm graduates,
family members and others showed as cameras flashed amid an abundance of hugs
and laughs.
Preparing to receive his bachelor’s degree in social
work, Arther Bray of Pelham said he was ready to take on the world. “Everything,”
he said when asked his post-graduation plans.
“My immediate plan is to work with children. My
concentration is foster care. Save the world one kid at a time,” Bray said.
He transferred to the university two years ago from
Middle Tennessee State University because he knew the program for his field of
study was solid. “It has prepared me well,” he said of Montevallo.
His wife, Ivy, knew the degree has extra meaning for him.
“He’s worked really hard for this, and he’s the first one in his family to
graduate” from college, she said.
“We’re excited. We’re so proud of him,” she said, taking
a photo of her family including their three children: Dee, 16, Mark, 14, and
J.B., 11. “It’s been a long five years.”
Anthony Messina of Ventura, Calif., expressed a similar sense
of accomplishment for his son, 22-year-old Michael Messina, who is graduating
with a bachelor’s in history and a minor in Spanish. “He’s the first one in my
family to go through college. I’m proud of him,” the father said.
The new graduate said he is ready to work for a year or
two before seeking his master’s degree in library and information sciences. “I
don’t want to rush into graduate school,” he said, cords draping from his neck
to signify his cum laude standing and his affiliation with Sigma Delta Pi,air jordan shoes, the
national Spanish honors society.
“I thought I would be super, super, like, freaking out,”
but it hasn’t yet kicked in, Messina said. “Maybe I’m postponing reality.”
With glittering letters on her cap stating “I’d rather be
at Hogwarts,” Leah Pedersen of Somerville didn’t mind showing off her Harry
Potter love. “Well, I mean, come on — magic,” the 25-year-old said about her
statement.
“It inspired me to go to college and I wanted to go to
one that looked like Hogwarts, but there’s not one in the United States,” said
Pederson, who earned her bachelor’s in social work.
Is the University of Montevallo a close substitute? “Absolutely,”
she said.
Melissa Boyles, air jordan 11, who grew up around Prattville, is taking
her business management degree with a concentration in environmental studies to
India, where she plans to get her yoga certification starting around the end of
the year.
She plans to return to the region somewhere along the coast to open a business concentrating on well-being
through sustainable living, seed-to-table practices and yoga instruction. “I
really think the Southeast needs something like that,” she said about the “untapped
Eastern philosophy of holistic well-being.”
The University of Montevallo suited her needs well. “I
just knew when I came to visit, this was the perfect place for me,” the
23-year-old said.
Ashley Lowe of Hoover, air max 2012, the outgoing Student Government
Association president, in her speech to the class said the university encouraged
people to be unique and diverse. “What you get here isn’t just an education.
What you get here is an experience,” she said.
No graduation ceremony would be complete without words of
wisdom for the departing class members, and this year’s keynote speaker
delivered her “nuggets of truth.”
Bestselling author Cassandra King, who earned a bachelor’s
in English in 1967 from Alabama College — as the university was called then — and
later her master’s degree in English in 1988 from the institution, addressed
her fellow class members after receiving her honorary doctor of letters degree.
The university and her experiences became the setting of
her bestselling novel “The Same Sweet Girls” released in 2005. She spoke about attending
the institution in the ’60s when her mother wanted her to become a Southern belle
and she wanted to rebel by becoming a playwright.
At first, King didn’t think she meshed with the beauty
queens and sorority sisters at the college, but her outlook changed during an “incident
at convocation.” She recalled a beauty queen in her Southern drawl concluded
that after traveling and meeting people around the world, “she was still the
same sweet girl she has always been.”
Laughter slowly grew among King’s peers around her “and
with that laughter we were connected,” she said, noting the start of a
friendship group that has lasted 45 years.
King told the graduates to be sweet, humorously adding
that “sincerity and sweetness can be faked,” but to be nice as well. “Be open
to love. It can come from an unlikely place as I discovered that day in convocation,”
she said.
“Be as strong as you can be. Life is going to break your
heart. That I can promise you,” she continued. “The only way to bear it is to
understand that suffering comes with the package.”
King urged the class to “be a little crazy, air max 2013. It’s the only
way to survive this crazy world,” she said.
She also told the graduates to “be grateful” and call
their parents. “At some point we must forgive each other for being flawed human
beings,” she said.
Caitlyn Wilkey, 22, of Columbiana looked back to the
family she loves as she graduated this morning. Wearing a Montevallo sash around
her neck, she said the tradition is to give it to someone who influenced her
college experience.
“I’m probably going to give it to my grandmother because
she always said to reach for my dreams,” Wilkey said, referring to Laura
Guthrie of Alabaster. “She’s been a really big part of my college career.”

Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders leaves behind Denver Broncos defenders in 1990 at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac-air jordan sneakers

(AP Photo/Duane Burleson, file) Former Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders was one of the most prolific, air jordan sneakers, unique players in NFL history, air jordan 11. The Hall of Famer was undersized but spectacular in the way he switched directions, made defenders miss and spun out of danger.

Sanders might not go down as the BEST running back in NFL history, but he’ll be close and no player will ever match his style, air max 2013. The collection of spin moves, air max 95, jukes, jumps and shifts on a dime were all Barry’s.

Sanders published a video on his YouTube channel this week of his highlights as a prep player at Wichita North High School, and they’re exactly what you’d expect them to be.

If Sanders was a man amongst boys in the NFL, then he was a young adult amongst toddlers as a high school senior.

Sanders, air jordan retro 11, the No. 3 pick in the 1989 NFL draft, led the NFL in rushing four times and ranks third all-time with 15,269 career yards. He was a Pro Bowler in all 10 of his professional seasons before abruptly retiring in 1998.

Sanders penned a book in 2003 to talk about his career and his retirement, and he’s in the midst of a campaign to run back into the public’s hearts. In addition to his in-house PR efforts, Sanders was also recently voted as the cover athlete for the new Madden 25 cover.

Here’s a look at Sanders breaking ankles as a high school standout:
